Retro Atlanta

The Skyway Apartments are located on South Cobb Drive in Marietta, near Dobbins Air Force Base and the Lockheed plant. There seem to be relatively few of the "stucco box" apartment buildings in and around Atlanta, however, this one seems to have appeared at just the right time. Dobbins AFB was begun in 1941 (under the name Rickenbacker Field) as part of the war effort. Lockheed reopened the plant (which had previously been operated by the Bell Aircraft Corporation) in 1951. These apartments may have been constructed about this time.

When reading about the Mondrian-type decorations on many 50's era apartments, I thought of the Atlanta Fire Department Station #29.

Midtown Bowl has been around since about 1960, though the harlequin-patterned stucco pattern is somewhat more recent.
