Historic African American suburbs

I am a little behind in my blogging... Wiese discusses several African American neighborhoods in Atlanta. According to Wiese Washington Park was the first planned development for African Americans in Atlanta. Washington Park is in Northwest Atlanta. The center of the neighborhood is Washington Park, which was built in 1919. Before the creation of this park, there weren't any parks built for African Americans within the Atlanta city limits. Washington Park today seems to be a working class area in the midst of a dramatic transition. While I found houses in the area for sale on line that listed at $39,000 and $53,000, there is also much new residential development in the area. Also, a new natatorium was built for the park several years ago.
Washington Park is located near the Atlanta University Center. Many times African American suburbs developed surrounding black colleges. Wiese names Gammon Seminary as an institution that attracted the development of housing for it's black employees and students. Gammon Seminary opened in 1870 as the religion and philosophy department of Clark Atlanta and became an independent Methodist Seminary in 1883.
